Tailgate Central Locking problem SOLVED!!
« on: Jan 27th, 2009, 6:51pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Hi there one and all,

My car has been a picture of health for 10 years, still waiting for a bulb to blow, but it seems to have taken a dislike to 2009!

The tailgate no longer opens when the central locking remote button is used. Is there a central locking reset that can be done or some other fix?
All the wires running to the tailgate seem perfectly fine with no chafing.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

hi there

i take it that the tailgate is still working with the button?

if so, it's more than likely the remote that's playing up.

just give the inners a clean.....

I did wonder about the remote.
No, it doesn't open the tailgate when I use the button. It seems like the tailgate has just disconnected itself from the central locking however.....for a long time, now and again when I open the car with the remote the tailgate lock justs whirrs on and on, clunking away but doing nothing. Now when I hit either the unlock button or tailgate only button nothing happens. There is no telltale whirr or unlocking sound at all. Have to use the key which is a total waste of at least 5 maybe 10 calories!!!!!!!  Grin

Sounds like the release motor on the lock (it's used with the remote or the button but not with the key), probably a tooth broken on one of the gears.

Agree

take the trim off the tailgate and have a look at what's moving (or not in your case).

it's easy enough to figure out what should do what.

Are you sure the lock barrel is completely free to move? Common fault, had it on both of my Scorps, muck gets thrown up and the barrel can no longer slide free in the housing.

Thanks for all the good advice. I will try all the remedies mentioned and report back.
Another symptom of my problem is that sometimes when I close the tailgate the lock doesn't ..err..lock. It just bounces back and takes a few tries to get it to hold tight.

When that happened on mine it was a tooth out in the gears of the lock motor preventing the lock returning.

If it is that you can leave the motor out until you get another, just means you have to use the key to unlock.

Hi Crash,

Happened to me three months ago on an airfieldparking - friggin' boot would not lock anymore!
Proved to be the grey plastic French electric push/pull motor which has an actuator rod opening and closing the mechanical lock.

Inside the motor there is a kind of reversing ballpoint-click-mechanism which gets dirty and greasy so its electrical contacts won't return the actuator to its resting position inother words it does not move and the boot does not lock nor open.

Either remove the T-shaped motor, open it and clean it or better get one new for € 99 from Fords or € 35 used and you're done. Code is  FINIS 7013072

Let me know how you go -
Ray

Hi Ray,

I think you may have it! I took the trim off and had a good look around. It all looks like the day that it left the factory with not a wire out of place. I can see the actuator arm of the motor but it's in its correct 'at rest' position.  Ian, I gave the barrel a good WD40ing because it was quite stiff and wouldn't return back out when it was pushed but it has made no difference. I assume that when the button is pushed in makes an electrical contact that commands the French motor to operate but it seems to be resisting....must be on strike! Just in case I have cheked both remotes and the motor still will not budge. The actuator arm is free to move though.
How did you get the motor out Ray? I can barely see it never mind get to it. I figure that the two screws, coming through the tailgate panel, are holding it in place but I worry about what else will move if I just go ahead and blindly undo them. I have felt around the connections and they all feel fine and secure.

I don't suppose anyone has a motor from a car they are breaking do they?

To be continued,

Paul

Crash,
I don't know if you solved the boot unlock problem by now but just to let you know I had a similar problem to yours some weeks ago. It turned out to be the loom wiring at the 's' bend from the boot lid. I know you said there are no signs of chafing but that's how mine looked from the outside. It wasn't until I unwrapped the loom tape that I found the wiring insulation was split with some wires broken, some shorting and one hanging on by a thread which would not pass sufficient current for the lock motor to work properly. In short, don't dismiss the loom wiring just because it looks ok from the outside.

Maybe its in order to inject some silicone oil or somthing to keep the insulation from getting hard and cracking? Would that work?

The problem is caused by the boot hinge hitting the loom if the loom is not secured properly against the body. The constant contact causes the wires to fracture and, has been said, it is often NOT visible until the outer covering of the loom is removed.  Wink

Yes two screws, not so easy to get at.
Then 2 screws in the grey engine body; open it up, get the muck of 13 years out, use contactspray and contact lubricant light oil it and go.

Or go to the breakers and get a used one. OPen it up aqnd clean first, equally old probably!

Thanks for the replies guys!

mindofitsown,

Sounds possible. I will have a really good look next week when I get a chance. If I replace/clean the motor the problem will continue unless I have a look at the wiring. It would be a much easier fix with just a bit of wire patching to do.

Ray,

Thanks for that. If the wiring looks sound when I get a chance to look then I think I might pop to the breakers where I know he has a couple of Scorpio's, just cannot recall whether one was an estate. Got to be easier to clean up a spare just in case it goes badly wrong.
