Petrol fumes with roof open

Seem to be having a problem with what smells like petrol fumes getting inside the car with the roof, or rear windows open.

I did have a problem with some oil leaking onto the engine, but that has been cured, and this petrol smell is quite pronounced. Mrs WBPH says she can't smell anything on her side of the car, but it is quite strong to me.

I've had a look at the petrol cap and see there is a small hole at the side of where the actual cap fits.

Is this a vent from the tank ? It seems to smell quite strongly of petrol. If I block it off what effect will this have, except possibly causing a vacuum in the tank if ever I manage to fill it completely up.

If it isn't that, any ideas please. The smell is incoming at all speeds, which made me think it might be coming from the front end somewhere, but it all seems ok under the bonnet.

I did replace the original filler cap with a lockable one following an attempted siphoning attempt, but it is not the tight screwdown that the original is.

the cap might be the case... i had a similar situation with fumes to be smelled only on the drivers side with windows open and it was coming from the back, no matter what speed, and the cause was a hole in the tank itself... this basically shows that no matter what the fumes somehow can get to you from the back.
i'd also check all the hoses...

The first place to check is the tank itself. You need to get under the car and see if there is any sign of petrol running from the top of the tank. The sender unit is situated on the top and that can be a source of leakage....as can the tank itself rusting. Smiley
Go to THIS page and select Petrol Tank which will give you all the details you may need. Wink
