Head Gasket Replacement Time

A few months ago the scorpio started overheating quite badly. I finally got around to using a sniffer test kit I bought from drheadgasket website. The middle one with filter fitted which is supposed to be 99% accurate. Anyway my blue fluid turned yellow pointing to gases in the cooling system. At least now I know and I will need to get my hands dirty on it again. Also might give me more room to finish the rest of the wiring under the bonnet while I'm there. Parked this up for a few months as I was just so frustrated with it. Presumed best place for a quality head gasket kit is Burton Power so have ordered that and new bolts and awaiting arrival. Dont want to run the risk of any known cheaper brand failures after doing heads.

So I'm also wondering where to stop. Do I do the chains, guides etc while I'm in that far? Just the guides maybe? Car has only done 70,000 easy miles so shouldn't really need chains. Burtons do a tensioner check valve, chain blade and guides. Think I'll make the decision once stripped down.

I didn't replace my chains or guides. Just check it over for wear. If you have the time and money then go for it. Burton don't do all the guides, TopBoss do a kit I believe. Check Motomobil for some other bits like injector/fuel rail seals. I replaced the metal water pipe that goes in the Vee - Burton Power. I replaced the bypass hose too. Dan

Thanks Dan. Been thinking about some hoses(full roose silicone kit is expensive though I'll check all mine as I go through) as well as the guides. I will be blanking off that EGR connection at the back of throttle body assembly and manifold this time around. It was a nightmare to reconnect last time around doing the wiring. Wondering now about the water pump also. I'll need to go back through the water pump comments to see about repair.

the guys who done my water pump come highly recommended by my st people. my egr is blanked off, purely for the reason you mention. you will lose some efficiency on a run, I'm down about 3mpg on a long run but in normal use it's the same. I'm in the process of swapping rear axle- leaking and noisy, replacing fuel pump and rebuilding rear calipers. never stops! Dan

Never thought that it would actually affect the mpg Dan but you're right according to a search on the old google. Would have thought it was only for helping with emissions but there you go. Have now decided to take the engine out to renew the engine bay loom after seeing that it runs down the LHS engine bay along the front of the radiators behind the bumper and back towards the C110/2 multiplugs on the RHS. I might look at switching these plugs (and anything else sensible) over to the passenger side for a shorter run through the bulkead to ECU and then just run short loom over the back of the engine on bulkhead. Once the engine is out I will see the scale of the issue. Engine out will allow full inspection of heads, water pump etc.
