Slow take off

I have recently aquired a 96 2.3 Auto Ultima Estate. I get blown off at the lights by transit vans. I know the traction control system affects the throttle but even with it off there is no difference. It takes an eon to get to 3000rpm then after that it seems fine.Can anyone help

You should have a flashing yellow/orange light in your instrument cluster, and feel the pedal getting pushed backally if it's the traction control.
Could it be that the box is selecting a too high gear?
What happens if you manually select 1 or 2 when you drive off?

Thanx for the replies. Ive had automatics before and am not afraid to bury the right foot in any car . Doesn't make any difference. I have tried starting in first and cant feel much difference. Is it because its the size of the USS enterprise? What would it take to change it to a manual?

Sounds like somethings wrong, I've tried a couple of 2.3's and i dont think it's much slower off its mark than the 24v
had an OBD scan done?
P.S. if you bury the right foot on your bike you might be in bother

That doesn't sound right. I've had a few Granada's and now the Scorp, none were slow or in slightest bit sluggish of the mark and I never slip clutches. My 2.9 12v auto, if I wish to, leave everyone standing at the lights.
Is it only the initial take which is slow?
If so check that the auto box is actaully starting in 1st, count the changes up to 4th (D).

First advice is to check the MAF, and throttle body,
The MAF has a verry big infuluence on the gearbox, how is the oil level in the box, what color what smel, also air filter could be full of dust and it cold harden you acceleration.
I myself have a 2.3 (manual) and had a few problems with acceleration, a bit slugish. But a new fuel filter, oil change, air filter and spark plugs did real wanders....now it revs like a sport's car

My 2.3 spends most of it's time sitting around at the moment and when I first take it out from cold it's somewhat sluggish for about a mile or two; won't do kickdown or anything in that time, I think mabye this is a safeguard on the management system. With the Mondeo, by the time I'm at the end of the road it feels 100% so the Scorp is a bit strange in this respect.
Best thing you can do is get it out on a quiet road and open it up a bit, I don't mean thrash it up to 6000rpm, just feed the throttle firmly until you feel it latch into kickdown and hold it there, does wonders on mine. At the end of the day, as much as I like my 2.3, I've driven more gutsy motors and do miss the power at times but it's a nice drive and I don't feel it becomes limited until motorway speeds when loaded down. Remember you have a 150bhp 2.3 16v there lugging 1500kg, as good as it may be it's still not going to compare to a full bore V6 or V8; BHP per tonne is around 90, compare this to some other production cars to get an idea...
Oil, plugs and filters change may help matters though, also check the autobox is behaving properly.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Will try the things suggested. At the end of the day its a damm GOOD car for £240 .Got more toys than Santa  . I suppose i'm used to the old 24v granny. Maybe i could superchip it...........

Well, i had the pleasure of rideing in a cossie about 3 or 4 times, what i can say is that it accelerates like crazy. When you put the pedal to the metal....it's simply like a beast, breaks your neck, glues you to the chair, and you feel your ribcage pressing your lungs. Maybe i'm over-rating it....but it's simply breath taking

Got to drive a 1997 24v Ultima a few weeks ago, to be honest I was mildly disappointed, not what I was hoping it would be. I was looking for something with a better (more usable) low end grunt, my main gripe with the 2.3 is that it tends to feel so gutless at low revs, goes into kickdown the moment I touch the happy pedal at speed, the 24v felt much the same. Fair's fair, nice car but at £1450, not worth ditching mine for. Ford autoboxes and a new set of gremlins lurking under the bonnet put the fear of God into me.
Peak torque on the 2.3 lies well above 4000rpm, you'll need it up there to make it move, be careful of blowing the cylinder head though, you won't be the first victim .
Sorry if my humble opinion again offends somebody .

Cleaned the MAF and what a difference! Box changes when asked to and take off has been improved by 20%. 5 mins work has made it drivable again.
