If your ABS light is on when you start up and clear up as soon as move off (exceed 15mph) what does suggest as to where the fault may be?

You still got problems?? when you turn ignition on the ABS light will come on for 2~3 sec.s then go out,this is the system start up check & wont go out if theres a permanant fault. If its gone out & then comes back on when you drive off & you havnt touched the brake its bound to be a weak or no signal from one or more wheel sensors.

Sorry to hijack this thread - but this is exactly the problem that has manifested over the weekend. I turn ignition on, all warning lights come on then go out. I start up, but as soon as I reach 15 mph, the ABS light illuminates and stays illuminated until I next switch engine/ignition off.
 
Is this a faulty sensor then ? Also, is there a simple check to isolate which sensor is faulty ?  
 
I have the early TD model therefore, not certain that I can use a diagnostics kit to isolate the fault - last time I had another fault looked at, not a lot of information was available the kit was plugged in. Therefore, if there is a more manual way of isolating the problem, this would help me enormously.

Hi there, no problem about hijacking the thread.
 
It sounds like a modulator fault from what you describe rather than a sensor. I'm sure someone more experienced will be able to provide a more detailed and comprehensive and pre diagnosis.

Thanks for your reply Butterfingers. I was just looking at the link that Simmo has attached further up this thread and looking at the Braking Concerns piece. It appears that if the modulator is faulty if the light stays on all the time - which is not quite what mine is doing. The next box down is exactly what mine is doing - I thought it was over 15mph, but is actually over 11mph when the light illuminates. So I am wondering if it is more of a sensor problem. Perhaps I will still need to look at the modulator - so thanks for this.
 
The only other thing - I was just flicking through the problem solving guides and there is an interesting point that somebody has found when there is a lot of standing water. Apparently, there is a multiplug leading to the ABS module (in the engine bay low down on the offside Macpherson strut turret) which had made a poor connection - there was a lot of water around on Friday in SE England!! Have any of you experienced this ?

usually if its a bad connection the light stays on, sounds like a dirty sensor or possibly a wheel bearing?

Try the connections first just in case, you can get to the rear ones by lifting the back seat then lifting the two little flaps of carpet.
 
The rear sensors are easiest to remove so try them first, you need a 10mm spanner to disconnect them from the caliper.
The front ones wont come out without breaking (I've only ever managed to get one out once) but I think you'll be able to clean them from the back of the hub if you can remove the plastic cover but i've never done that while they are still on the car.
 
Worth checking the wheel bearings if you've got the car jacked up anyway.
 
You can test them with a multimeter too but again thats not something i've ever done, someone else might help you out with that  Grin

If its a sensor fully failed then the light could very well stay on all the time, even at start up. If the sensor works intermittently, then the light would stay on at start up (after havintg previously come on) and go out as you exceed 11mph. Then it could come on at any time, moving, stopped, rain, dry, sun, dark doesn't make a difference.
 
But the best thing is to have a scan done to work out where the fault lies.

Doesnt sound like an intermittent fault he has though, the system passes the initial test then throws up a problem at 15 mph.

Hi,
I had the same problem and it was the actual multi plug on the modulator, cleaned and re-seated the plug. Problem cleared.

Guys - thanks for shining the light on so many places to look at - it really is appreciated. What I will do is look at all of these, in the order of simplicity / cost, until I find the gremlin.
 
Jim's suggestion of the modulator multiplug is a simple elimination (and cheap), so will be my first - and if any electrical fault were to occur, my drive home on Friday night was one of the "wettest" drives I have ever done. Sometimes water and 11 yr old electrics don't like each other.
 
Then next will be Highlander/Hellblue's suggestion of cleaning a sensor - I need to change the rear pads anyway (got new ones in the garage ready to fit) so makes sense to look at the those rear sensors. The front ones are b*****ds to get out. I have already tried the n/side when I replaced the front wheel bearing early this summer (and I bet the banging / crashing around there has come back to bite me) - not sure how I am going to do this without damaging them. Am I right in thinking, when the sensors are fitted, they would just slide into a recess/hole, retained by the 10mm bolt and the years of crud has seized them in place ? It looks like a job for some sort of extractor/puller - I bet there isn't such a thing ?
 
Finally, failing all of this, its the costly exercise of Butterfingers' suggestion. Mind you - found out the price of the sensors, should they be faulty.  Shocked Shocked
