LCD display on stereo has vanished!

I have a 7000 RDS stereo unit which has and still does function fine, but all of a sudden, the LCD display has vanished! It was OK a couple of days ago but I got in last night and although the radio, CD etc and all functuions work as normal, there is nothing in the LCD panel, although the panel does light up. Nothing has been done to it, and nothing untoward has happened to the car. Any advice?  Huh

Iirc it should be part of a security panel? Take it inside and let it dry over night. If that doesn't work, try cleaning the contacts.

this is a common fault ..ive read a few threads on here and this has happened t ome as well. I took the whole unit out and left it on the radiator for a whole day ..plus I hairdryered the inside a bit..however the fault returned within a month.

good luck

No Brian, you are not alone mate Wink

Again, again and again this happens. Mine has been fine all year but has now decided to pack up completely again. Pulled it to bits a while back, it seems to be the LCD display at fault, the display chip is still putting out drive/segment voltage. I'm also losing some segments in the CC panel too although that isn't as bad as the radio, last time they went was when the old battery was dying, hope that isn't a prelude to another £80 Motorcraft battery.

Get the same fault with mini hifi systems and the like, SMD circuitry has a bad aversion to moisture and heat at the best of times, my car has been through 3 of these now...

At times like this I really wish I could put a better system in without cutting the car about too much. I'm not after 130dB loudness, just a system with a good solid low end and sonics that doesn't bottom out like the Ford one does.

Ahhh...I can dream  Roll Eyes

Also, I removed the whole facia from the head unit. There is a small data type ribbon that connects the main part of units to the LCD in the fasia. The clip that holds it in place is not that great, so I removed it cleaned the contacts and put it all back together. Not a huge job.

I know about the carbon ribbon connectors, they get used a lot nowadays. Not great quality but aren't the thing normally causing problems, had mine stripped down completely and still get the same recurring problem every winter. Mine's gone altogether now, if I hold my hand against it for a minute or 2 I get a faint outline of it but otherwise it's dead.  The best type of display are the proper fluorescent ones in a sealed glass envelope with on board heaters but they're far more expensive and consume more power...

Nick one of those nice blue/red display tubes out of an ancient VCR or receiver and splice it into the Ford electronics...far nicer Cheesy

Nice to know I'm not alone anyway. I didn't do anything to it, but it suddenly resumed normal display on Saturday afternoon, and seems to be normal now. Fingers crossed!  Undecided
