Cruse Control not working

Hi, I have 1998 24V model Scorpio and the cruse Control does not work. The light comes on but will not set the speed or anything. Could anyone point me in the right direction on where I should be looking or what I might need to replace so its working again.... I am going to be driving down to Spain later in the month and would like to use the cruse on the motorways. Thanks in advance.

hi there first check the cable from the cc module. it might have fell off. the modulel is down behind the drivers h/light (rhd). then check the gearing in the module. on mine, the gearing had siezed. the modules are all the same. it's the cable that's a differnt length for the different engines. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ccmanl.htm hth

As Andrew says check the cable. A common fault is that it will fall off where it it attached to the actual throttle linkage. There is a small 'banjo' shaped connector which slips over a peg on the throttle linkage and if it wears or breaks no cruise control.

Hi I have intermitant loss of cruise control, I get nothing when I hit the buttons, other times it works first time, could it just be the buttons, when it works its fine with no problem, but you can never tell when it is not going to work, did I read some where there is a manual switch under the brake pedal, when I take it out of cruise with the brake pedal it then does not always work, any ideas please Colin E

| Mine was completely failing to respond when I first got it. I eventually traced it to some slight oxidation on the multi plug pins on the cruise control. This is located over your right knee or toe, as you drive, just drop the kick panel down and it is the small module above the panel. I just pulled out and reinserted the plug a few times, combined with some WD40. There are no water leaks in my car, so suggest the oxidation was probably due to moisture from wet shoes carried into the cars interior. Another possibilty is an intermittant brake sensor. When you press the brake a switch on the brake is supposed to switch cruise off, perhaps that switch is not closing properly. When can't get the CC to switch on, try touching the brake pedal a few times - if the CC then works....

If the cruise lamp does not light up when you switch the system on (AND set a speed above about 26mph) then the problem is electrical - by which I mean either no power to module, bad module, bad VSS (also no speedo) or most likely, dirty switches or a broken steering wheel coupler (in which case the SRS airbag light will also be on). There are switches on both the brake and clutch (where fitted) pedals and if these are dirty/faulty/misadjusted then you will not be able to set any speed, or worse, it will not disengage when you brake or dip the clutch! If the light comes on as it should then the problem is mechanical and you should check the physical link between the actuator between the radiator and RH headlamp, and the throttle body or injection pump. If they are both connected then the actuator may have failed internally or have a bad connection on the multiplug. Darren

I have the 2.3 model and there is no light to indicate that the cruise control is active. Is it just the 24v that has this option? Thanks

John, if you have the cruise control fitted then you should get a little green lamp light up on the left side of the dash. Still got the 2.3 then, eh? I thought you was going to let it go Regards, Bruce.

It is an item which is difficult to test when there are problems. You either need a rolling road or a means of replicating the VSS's output, to be able to do a static test. If the light comes on, that at least means the CC module would seem to be working. The actuator which is located right at the very front of the car, close to the radiator would be my suspect. Just follow the bowden (like a bike brake cable) cable, from the end of the accelerator linkage forwards and it should lead you right to the actuator itself. All the actuator does is move the throttle dependent upon whether the CC module decides you are above or below your preset cruise speed.

Hi Bruce, Thanks for the info. Yes, still got the Scorp. I use it now and again and prefer it on shorter journeys. The LPG also makes it a great option for driving in the city centre. Hope the Jag is behaving. Thanks mate. John

Thanks for all the info guys on looking I have found the cable which runs up from the unit near the drivers headlight broken at the throttle end (plastic clip broken) Phoned local dealers and it seems its order only, next day. Part Number 1018362 £20.64+vat £24.25 total... as its for a Cosworth engine its an extra £10.00!!

On this point.... My cable had an excessive amount of free play in it, which meant when I engaged the CC there would be quite a delay before it took over and I could lift my foot. The play is easily adjusted out, but it must have some small amount of play - the pick up on the CC is now much better.

this might be a really stupid thing to say but there is a bit of a nack to switching the cc on on my car - dunno if this is the same for everyone. I have to press the on button and just as i let it go the + button to set the speed. Its a bit picky if you dont do one after the other quickly or if you just press them together it wont work. I keep seeing adverts for scorps with broken cc but wonder how many ppl actually experiment a little to get it to respond - the owners handbook is not very easy to understand but then neither is what i just said i doubt hardehaha

Yep thats how they work, not the best design though Another one to look out for if the cruise isnt working on a new car is that it is actually fitted and someones not just replaced the steering wheel with one that has all the buttons
