Diesel with Auto G/Box Problem

I have a 1998 Diesel with Auto Gearbox problem.
Advice required.
Reverse takes ages to engage. However, I have found that if I flick the ignition key off/on quickly without stopping the engine, reverse will engage instantly with a thud. Forward upward changes only occure with high revs unless you feather the accelorator.
Any idea's?
