water trap rear arch guard

Hello folks, I have noticed on my travels that the rear wheel arches on the face lift scorpio seem to rot a lot faster than the earlier models .I have had sneaky looks at other scorps (when I find one that is ) and to my surprise the face lifts seem to have a problem. So I looked at my wheel arches and the rot point seems to be the back area of the arch close to where the rear bumber sits ,and also a small area just above the rear bumber where it sits against the wheel arch .I then took of one of the back wheels and I may of found the problem area .The plastic arch guard has a cut out slot in it level with the bumber and water mud etc seems to sit underneath this area .It seems the guards cover very well everywhere else apart from here .. could any of you out there who owns a pre- face lift scorp have a look some time and tell me if your arch guards have a cut out slot at the back .If they do, then I need to look again .I am going to spend a fortune on rust repair and painting on my scorp and I want to eliminate any water traps that will cause problems at a later date . thank you in advance ...and has anyone else noticed that the face lifts rust faster than the earlier models ..regards david

Just been out and looked at my 98 cossie and see the holes you are on about in the arch protector, but my 94 Granada scorpio has the same holes. I took  them out on the granada and waxoiled behind them, will do same to cos in summer,  and it only has a very small bit of rust in the rolled part of the arch.

my dec 98 scorp has just started to get faint rust signs on the rear arches where they meet the bumber, incidentally my rear arches dont have any arch protectors on like the front and i tend to keep them flooded with waxoil, think they were removed before i got the car probably to ease fitment of the mudflaps i wonder!

Alas, my '96 pre-facelift had the same problem, both arches had rust on the rolled part just above the rear bumper - drivers side was worse, also the bottoms of the doors started to go where the rubber strips hold buckets of water...

I doubt it's a facelift problem through design, probably something down to materials in the model year as on many other makes of car, some years have one problem, other years have another. Another thing I've noticed in my travels is that the early model leather seems to wear far better than the leather in the later (97-onward) cars, another thing down to model year??

My '98 S reg pre facelift has a very small amount of rust in exactly the same place as my '97 P reg and my '94 M Granada. The rear arches do seem to be an unfortunate weak spot on all scorpios/granadas but the rest of the bodywork on my scorpios and granada has been rust free. Has this been a general experience?

Mine is a late '95 and the only rust I'm aware of is a small area along the very top of the nearside arch. Its about 2" long. Every thing else is like new.

Its predecessor my '92 Granada was flaking all the way round both arches, other than that she was a grand old lady with no other rust. This was evident when I bought it and when I resold it 6 years on, but I always did intend to get a round tuit.
