Gears kept dropping

I was out today, and this only happened a few times. It seemed like the gearbox disengaged, because the revs went up and there was no power for a few seconds. Any ideas what may have caused this Cheers Dan

Hi Just a couple of thoughts but please bear in mind I'm no mechanic ok! I've had this problem on the OLD STYLE Ford Granada Scorpio that was caused by leaking transmission fluid - when the level dropped so did the gears - might just be worth checking the levels to see. However..... IIRC the new style Scorpio gearbox is all electronic - I'm currently having "issues" while I'm trying to get my lame arse around to buying a new top hose with water spraying onto electrics which is causing the gears to drop. You could have a look at the top hose out of the radiator and see if there's any sign of a leak. Oh and one last thing when I first got the car the MAF was filthy cleaning that made a difference to gear changes that had to be seen to be believed. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm HTH Tim

Cheers Tim, I did check the gearbox oil level, and it needed around a lt of AMT. Also cleaned the MAF sensor. But now, since I created this topic the gearbox seems to be getter worse. Not soo much the gears dropping, but after I have been out (I.e. Shopping) and come back to the car, I drive off and sometimes the gearbox completly disengages for a few seconds before it shunts into gear. I have no water leaks as I keep a very close eye on the water, since I had head problems with my last cossie Thanks for the advice, and I will check to see if there is a gearbox leak Cheers Dan

Hi Dan, this happened to my previous (Granada) autobox very suddenly. It finally just stopped when it dumped all the gearbox oil on the road - trouble was I was half way up a mountain in France when it happened Is your oil still nice and pink & clean? Did you manage to get a scan? Paul

Hwey Paul How is things? Yep got a scan done the other week and it brought up 2 sensor faults (none to do with the gearbox) The oil seemed fine last time I checked it, but I will be checking it again at the weekend. Cheers Dan

hi there when you got the scan done, did you go into 'enhanced' to check for gearbox codes? sometimes they don't show unless you request them in enhanced mode. hth

Hiya Dan, sorry to hear about probs. If you get another scan ask Andrew (or someone) what enhanced data you're particularly after. EG voltage on MAF, etc. The enhanced info has loads more checks than the simple scan data - can be a bit of a minefield. Paul
