How near should I expect a colour match

Hi all,

I would like your thoughts on my problem.
I had my car pranged on a car park while in the shops, luckly someone witnessed it and he had driven off only to be stopped at the traffic lights...I NABBED HIM GOOD AND SURE...
Anyway all went well the car was taken to the insurance approved garage for a new front bumper and nearside wing repair, headlight and indicator...
Nearly three weeks later..Today...I went to pick up the car.....The wing and the bumper look black at certain angles and do nearly match at others angles...overall it looks as though I have been to the scrappies and found a wing and bumper nearly the same colour...
I refused to take it and they said they would have another go and try and fade it into the door ...does not sound too good as they did not mention the Bonnet contast....
Now in the back of your mind is 11 yrs old and therefore how near a match would you expect..in reality I would want it as it was before.....the colour is Samakand...metalic purple....

your coments may help me decided on what I see and say on Wenesday when it is supposed to be made BETTER!!

Cheers
John

Hi John,
I had my rear bumper replaced for a new one at my local ford dealers. I saw the new bumper when I dropped the car off and it was just as it came from the factory with no paint at all not even primer.
Anyway to cut a long story short, the colour match is 100% It was done last summer and I have not found an angle or lighting condition where it doesn't look perfect.
In my opinion it is down to the guy who is applying the paint.

I agree It should be a perfect match.

I had a new wing and bumper on my 11 year old scorpio and it is PERFECT. You cannot  see any difference.

Thanks lads,

Well you have confirmed what I first thought, I got the impression off them that nearly right was good enough as the car was not worth more than a grand, well what they had done was not even close...as I pointed out. Grin

They also mentioned that it must have been a very close call as to scrapping it...bet they now wished they had...

It's not as though they only did the odd body work..they are a large body shop...I even had to point out the bumper was not aligned with the bonnet and was out nearly 1/2inch to far in.....where has the pride of workmanship gone?

I will keep ypu posted as to the outcome.

Cheers

wudz,
what you need to remember here is this is an insurance approved garage therefore they have to meet a standard that your insurance company would be happy with.
if they can't come up with that standard it may be worth ringing the insurance comapany and telling them the work was inferior.
in my opinion it is not a responceiblity of the garage to decide or remind you if the car is almost a right off this the choice of your insurance company.

Wudz, if you pay for the car to be repaired, insurance or otherwise you have the right to expect it back as it was before it was damaged...even if the car wasn't worth a PENNY.

I've said before on here that our Capri once got rear-ended while parked outside our door. List price of the Capri at the time was around £300 but ours had been restored the year before and looked like new (no joke, it did, was near mint). In the end we got about £2300 for it and also got to keep it from being classed a writeoff, albeit after months of arguing.

Your Scorp might not be worth much but you're still the one paying the insurance, age/value isn't an excuse for letting a trainee on work experience do a crap respray on your car.

Sounds like they just dodn't bother to get the paint matched to the original batch...fading in could mean a lot of things, just hope it means going down to the colour coat and matching it better.

Good luck.

Regards, Bruce.

Wudz,
Something that may be worth bearing in mind is I valued my car at £1000 at the time of my repairs.
The repairs cost the insurance company £957.00 And they still repaired it. However the guy at the dealership was very impressed with the cars condition and I think it helped matters when he spoke to the insurance company.
Take a look at this old thread of mine

I agree with what's said here.

It doesn't matter how much the car is worth. The bodyshop are being paid to do a professional job, not an inferior one.

Don't accept the work until you are 100% happy with it.  Wink

Thanks for all the input,  seems like I had set my expectations on the low side...I totally agree that I should get my car back in pre prang condition and even more so seeing that I had no blame whatsoever...really is pieing me off..nearly three and a half weeks and still not resolved for what really was a minor damage.
I will not not accept it back unless it is a perfect match.. Smiley

I will let you know as to the outcome..

Cheers
