Fuel Gauge, Please Help!
« on: May 21st, 2007, 11:26am »

I have a 1995 M Plate Ultima Estate.

Posted a problem a week ago about the 6 CD changer and fuel gauge problem.

Managed to fix the CD changer problem thanks to everyone's help. I took out the CD changer, took it apart VERY carefully gave it a clean inside and it all appears to be working now - fingers crossed!

However, the fuel gauge is getting worse and worse and I dont know what to do about the situation. It is very confusing as you lose track of how much fuel you have in the tank. Each time you turn the ignition on you get a different reading sometimes high sometimes low. I've tried looking at the odometer fuel level using the computer but that concurs with the fuel gauge pin!

Has anyone had this problem before or know what's wrong and the solution. It is very offputting as you can imagine! Any help very gratefully received.  Huh

Could this be a problem with the connections to the 'sender' unit which sits on top of the petrol tank?. The details can be found HERE by going to Fuel tank.

Thanks for your reply simmo. Sounds like this could be the problem. As the scorpio ages the wiring contacts do get shaky it seems. Do you know if there is a way to clean the contacts without going through the draining of the tank etc..?

I'm afraid I dont. Hopefully someone will be able to help you and also have an idea where the wires run. Good luck.

Most likely its the sender unit in that tank that has gone. (nime is the same, havn't sorted it yet).
It means dropping the tank and removing the fuel pump/sender to check/replace it though.

I have a spare sender unit if you need one.
This will help for removal which isn't too difficult so long as it isn't full....

 Agree

Run it almost out of fuel before tackling it.  You' be surprised how easy it is without having 3 gallons plus of fuel sloshing around in it LOL  Wink

Guys, not sure if you can access the connector without dropping the tank but if you can it might be worth taking it off, giving it a dose of WD40 or switch cleaner and plugging it in/out a few times to scrape the contacts clean. If that doesnm't work, THEN drop the tank.

The sender inside is normally a float with a wiper moving accross a carbon track, a bit like the volume control on a hifi. As they age they get gummed up (more likely if exposed to air most of the time, i.e. if you run it on fumes most of the time Roll Eyes) and give funny readings. Taking it out and cleaning it does work but it might be an idea to just get a new one to save having it happen again in 6 months time.

By the way, if it's held in the tank with a metal ring with 3 lugs, Ford say you need a special tool but you don't Wink Grin

Flat blade screwdriver and a light hammer, lightly knock one of the lugs anti-clockwise to un-do the ring and release the sender Wink

Regards, Bruce.

Anyone know where petehull is. I've checked the fuel sender and the multiplug. Still does not work properly. I feel that changing the fuel sender may do the job.
