Autobox noise?

Not sure if this is an issue or not, but when I transfer from drive to reverse (and other way too), I get a short delay (maybe 1-2 seconds) and during that time a noise that sounds like gas/air, best description is a "sssshhh"! is this an omen, or something I can live with?? Thanks,

It's quite normal. An automatic gearbox has a large number of chambers into which transmission fluid is pumped to enable or disable the gear selected. Very technical, but nothing to worry about. So long as your fluid is at the right level, and clean, auto-boxes are exceptionally reliable. They usually only fail when drivers cane them. If you want to read about it look at P7 of this article. hahaha, reliable? I drove mine like a Nun and it still died on me A good autobox should change almost immediately, as they wear they change slower. But a second or so is allowable, when mine felt emotional, it would delay for a couple of seconds then engage reverse with a shotgun like thump and jolt . Not sure about the ssshhh'ing noise though, never had that on any auto of mine. Regards, Bruce.

Thanks, that's good to know. My car has no history, but a stated 65000 on the clock for which condition suggests may be true. I had read that the later scorpios can't be clocked, but not sure if that is correct.

John, any car can be clocked if they try hard enough, but, no, Scorpios are not easy to clock and the 65k on yours is likely genuine. Check the level and colour of the autobox fluid, it should be a pinky/cherry colour albeit a bit dirty. Good luck.

| Mine does a little 'sigh'. Just the solenoids, but it could be mistaken as a slight hiss I suppose. Had it on the car ever since I've had it, and never had any problems. Only notice it when there is no other traffic about as it's really quiet. Quote:| I drove mine like a Nun and it still died on me |
| I'm having NUN of it Bruce. You should have called a priest, not a garage.

Hi Spanners, Yours does'nt have solenoids like the others, 12 valves only have 2 solenoids One engages 4th gear around 40 to 50 mph and the other does the converter lock around the 45 - 55 mph mark. regards Dave

| Alas, I did call a priest, the Rev. Father Ted. But when asked if he had any autoboxes, he just replied: "Nun left" I know, hit me

Hi Dave: No I know mine doesn't. But the query was general, so I've put a general sort of reply. Mine's got two rubber bands!! That's why it whirs as it goes along. Don't actually know what model of Scorpio the guy has got, but I've had 12 automatics now, and understand what he's saying. The 'noise' can be a little worrying the first few times you hear it.

Thanks for the advice chaps, and it is a 24v by the way. I too have had variuos auto's, but the noise was new to me! My brother even managed to get a Volvo 760 into reverse at 70mph once, and that made a very interesting noise!!
