stuck in "sport" mode

My daughter's cossie seems to be stuck permanently in "Sport" mode. Since I persuaded her to buy it and I am not prepared to pay her petrol bills, she is threatening to get rid of both the car and me.
Any ideas on where I can start to sort out the gearbox.
One idea I had was to let her have my cossie in exchange for hers, but that's got to be the last desperate act!

hi there
it defaults to 'e' after you switch the engine off. they can stick in 's' after you press the button, but it won't be in sport mode unless you push the button in the first place.
the only other thing i can think off is to what the mode lights as you switch the ignition on. can you see it switch from e to s? it's possible that the s button is jammed down. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/autoselector.jpg

Is it definitely in Sport mode?? Have you checked the gear changes??
Or is the light just showing all the time, which would indicate a gearbox problem rather than being stuck in S

I had a similar problem with mine a few years agon and found one of the leads to the sport switch had come unsoldered, fairly easy to check from memory once the lever surround was lifted.
could give this a try

I'll lift off the surround to the gear lever to cneck if there is a faulty connection.

TBH there is not much difference bestween Sprts mode and Econamy mode on the Cossie.
It still goes like stink and drinks petrol like its going out of fashion whichever mode its in.
Thats why they are such fun

Hi John. I'm a bit confused here, that's how it's supposed to be - default to E if you switch of the ignition, I thought it was stuck in S all the time?

Yes John -- if you find it defaults to 'E' after switching the ign ON then what's wrong in your opinion?
That's how it should be - 'E' on start - 'S' or '*' on demand; changing to 'E' on restart.

mine is stuck in sports but then i have a metled wireing loom behind the dash from summat shorting before i owned the car, good job ive got the car stripped and can get my hands on it lol
the car will 'go some' in E if you floor it as the box will kickdown,
in S if you keep going wont change gear till 6000rpm
as for the fule consumption, what is the trip computer saying its doing to the gallon??

yep, well mine does,
what i gather from reading the forum /site, all the magic S butten does is it stick the box in anoter mode, makes it hold onto the gear for longer (all the way up to 6000 rpm) then sort of 'quick shifts into the next gear, while keeping the engine in the power band 4000 - 6000 rpm.
when i burry the throttal, i get a nice deep burble from the engine, then all hell breaks loose as the engine starts screaming and before you know what hit you, your wedged into the seat watching the needle go round to the scary side of the speedo. the joy
the E mode makes the box change gear at lower speeds and rpm for town driving, but that no fun hehe

With the throttle planted to the floor, mine changes gear at 6200 whether in E or S mode.
S mode is really, as stated above, to increase responsiveness at lower speeds in order to reach the faster speeds faster, if you see what i mean?

In sport it spends less time hanging between the two gears during changes so you get a quicker 0-60 in theory and because it shifts harder with the higher line pressure it puts less wear on the bands apparently...
Great for the autobox, just wears the engine quicker 
It used to be overkill on the 2.3, with any throttle input it'd downshift, seemed to always aim for the 3-4000rpm band....used to feel really responsive though. Was brutal before I had the box sorted, felt a lot softer afterwards. I guess the ECU is tuned to the engine, the V6 has more low/mid torque...

In answer to your questions (tiberius and cosray) the "E" light comes on when pressed but the gearbox itself still remains in sport mode. i.e. starts in bottom gear and goes up to higher revs between gears.
My own car, also a cossie, has a beautiful gearbox and I therefore know how my daughter's car should drive in economy.
Incidentally, a head gasket blew yesterday on my dayghter's car. Ford have quoted £1000 to fix it so there's a better than even chance its going for scrap unless we can find a much more reasonable quote. Does anyone know anyone in the Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire area who would tackle it?
I will post this message as a new separate issue also.
