Still plays up when starting

Hi all, i recently started a topic- the car was starting on first turn but would cut out no sooner it had started. I replaced the plugs and the green/purple relay and cleaned the throttle idle valve, it seemed to work for a few days but the car went throught periods of starting fine then not. It worked fine for a couple fo days after the work i did but i went to start the car this afternoon, it started and immediatley cut out, it tunred oved fine and took a good 2-3 min to start. Sometimes it starts and dies over and over agian till it runs ok. If the car has been used it runs fine and never a problem. I know it has a new head gasket but the only thing i know is that when it had a diagnostic recently and after new temp senders, it was registering as being too hot, even when it was cold starting to loose my love of these cars now jim

Registering too hot even when cold = short or no connection in the temp sender loom? (don't remember if it was ground or no signal that would count as hot) I would check the wiring loom if I were you.

Have you tried dis-connecting the battery for half an hour, then re-connecting it ? Re-setting the ECU can solve these kind of problems sometimes

hi jim how did you clean the idle valve? did you work the ram with a drop or two of light oil? most of the time this cleaning works, otherwise you need a new/second hand one. hth

Hi, i cleaned it with carb cleaner first, i basically filled it up and left it for a few minutes, then drained it off. I then gave it a spray with 2 in 1, they left it to drain then plugged it back in. The problem is the car only plays up when its been sat for a while and gone cold so its not like, clean something, put it on and try again, it always starts when its hot/warm so have to leave it till the morning to see how it is. Some days tho its fine, others like today its a real pig. Just seems funny it was hot from the sun and wouldnt start lol

If the idle valve is like the top one here: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/iacvdata.htm The spindle is hollow (about 1mm bore) so covering the bleed hole in the end of the casing with lube/cleaner & sliding it back & forth like scorpio_man says will tend to force the lube/cleaner into the chamber in the solenoid. Don’t know if it's the same on the other type of valve shown. Dave

Hi tompion, yes its the same only about 2/3s the size, the one shown is the one i had on my 2.9 12v. I know that cleaner/lube got into the solenoid as i moved the rod about to lube it up well. When i put it back on car it fired up first time as it usually does and ran fine. Will have to wate till the morning now to see how it starts after being left all night. It will probably start fine, trick me into thinking its sorted out, then play up again in a few days lol will let you know what occures lol many thanks

Hi Jim. If it starts and runs with part throttle then the idle valve is at fault...opening the throttle a bit effectively by-passes the valve so it should run ok. Too much fuel and it'll flood so it won't start, will stink and when it does start you'll get smoke out of the exhaust with the excess fuel. If not enough it'll have trouble starting and run rough, stumbling etc because it can't ignite properly. Still sounds like the pressure regulator to me If you need, I could do you a scan, I travel through Thurrock now and then, just let me know.

Saw it Jonny. But it still sounds like a fuel issue to me - my starting issues remained even after the loom was kosha.
