The crank sensor is like a coil of wire, should put out a pulse related to engine speed (normally a few hundred hz at idle). Without it the engine will crank but not fire...it should also set a trouble code. If it's dead, check the connector and the loom which leads up to it first, check the connector is making good contact. Sounds unlikely that the (EDIS?) is also faulty, more faults of the bad loom maybe?

I presume the amplifier you talk about is the EDIS module? EDIS is the thing which fires the coils, a bit like the old ignition amplifiers...I've no idea where it is on the Scorpio though. The coils should always be getting a 12v feed (negative switched as I remember), might be worth checking there's voltage at the coil connectors before you suspect anything else. You can unplug the crank sensor and check it with a multimeter, should be a thousand ohms or something, as long as you get an ohm reading (not a short or open circuit) it should be ok. Hope this helps.

Jim, I could stick a scope on the sensor and see if it's really dead, could also do you an OBD scan and get some live data. But not sure when I'll be down your way next, might not be for 2 or 3 weeks Dead crank sensor would give a no-start issue, hoping it is just that If I can help, just let me know

Hi mate, many thanks for your offer. Today i replaced the sensor and still wouldnt start. I replaced majority of the wiring from the box above the injectors to basicall everything that runs from that, the car now starts but immediately cuts out, starts now without any hesitation but cuts out streight away. If i give it a bit of trotlle it will run but coughs and missfires from the engine area but cuts out as soon as the throttle is taked off. Ive tried another idle valve from the inlet manifold i fitted recently but makes no difference. if the inlet manifold was not air tight could this affect the cars idle and the popping sounds jim
