Sounds like it could be a problem with the coil packs starting to break down under load  Smiley

Before you go to the coils, and it could be that, try the MAF its situated right at the front, nice and easy.  Try cleaning it, with carb cleaner, squirt the stuff all around the aperture get it really clean paying most attention to the small hole in the centre with two little filaments in, but, only use the spray do NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE, these filaments will be shattered with just a touch of a cleaning rag. You might be suprised at the results.  Then again it will probable be the coils.   Best of luck.

Dont forget to check with a spy glass that the filaments are ok after you've cleaned them.  But anyway put it back cleaned and try it.

Hi and welcome to the site Smiley. The problem could be the MAF, worth giving it a claen even so. But far more likely as Jon said about some kind of HT misfire. Could be a failing coil or less likely plugs, be prepared though for the loom to disintegrate when you disturb it, the ignition loom has a nasty habit of doing this where it snakes behind the engine to feed the coils Sad

If the loom is going bad, a roll of insulating tape should sort you at least in the short term, just be prepared before you disturb anything.

It could also be the EGR. It usually kicks in at about 2200 rpm when steady and makes the engine run horrible. Try disconnecting the top vacuum hose from the egr capsule and put a plug on it (on the hose not on the capsule)

Thanks for the advice i cleaned out the MAF being careful not to damage the small sensors-the problem seems to have completely disapeared----a few of the wires to a couple of the sensors around the engine seem to have been losing their insulation but not to a great amount------and the coils were covered in a quick spray of WD40 ----Thanks to all-

Good at least we've got success, it often is the MAF, worth trying before you try the expensive options.  Well done.
