Help please -coolant fans

My gramps 97 cosworth scorpio coolants fans just won't cut in!!
We started by checking all fuses and both fuse boxes all ok and clean as a whistle as it's been garaged for many years.
Checked the r34 relay which seems ok.
Checked fans work by giving direct power, both ok
Temperature sensor looked manky so changed it today.
Run her up, fans cut in on start for 10 secs then went off run up to just below red and they still didn't come on  Angry

Does anyone know where I should start looking next as this is the only thing stopping me putting this awesome car back on the road.
Any ideas greatly appreciated .

Have you tried to run them by putting the aircon on, I think they should run at low speed. Bottom of temp gauge to centre = 20c to approx 95c, centre to top = 95c to 105c approx, so they may not run when the guage is in the red, if you follow what I mean.

Did you replace the fan temp sensor or the gauge temp sensor?

Hello there and welcome.

Have you driven your Scorp anywhere?  I know from experience that the Scorpios do not like being left idle for any period of time let alone years   Undecided.  I suggest you drive her for a few days keeping a eye on things and each time you go for a drive switch EVERYTHING on and off, and try out the ABS.  They love being driven - don't forget to open and close all doors as well.

Best of luck to you

Not really mate but we have run it up driven it up and down the road , just when aircon was on and it got to temperature the o/d fault light comes on so we warmed up to red and the fans didn't come on which is why I'm trying to cure that issue first to see if we still get o/d light. Apart from that everything else works how it should . My Gramp when he was alive looked after it and only done 57k miles .
It has been kept in a garage when not in use whilst he had it for the last ten years so generally it's all very good. Couple of minor usage scratches and some rust on the rear arches.
Want the faults clear to get it through the mot so I can bring it home and tidy the little bits to bring it back to mint.
Love that scorpio

I am not sure if this might help as it does show a relay and explain how they work.

If you disconnect the ECT the fans should come on (high speed I think).

There’s a document about the operation of the fans here:
http://www.collisters.plus.com/fan.doc

and you may find something of use here:

Well we finally got a lead to connect and use forscan, the main fault is the IAT sensor which I have ordered to replace next week.
Fans spooled up during diagnostics no problem .

Hopefully this will help cure the problem so will let you all know when the new one goes in
Cheers

Well after on and off working on the Scorp for 2 years we have discovered the loom is screwed with crumbling insulation  right back to the gearbox .

The old loom is with an auto electrician awaiting a quote to refurb it so will let you all know the costs when I know

You will find a lot on this website about the looms on the Cosworth. New ones not available anymore and your best bet is your auto electrician using the old connectors as some of those are not available.
Good luck with it and let us know how you get on. It's worth it in the long run.

My 98 cosworth has got some cracking and insulation loss, so I think that the wiring on all scorps is poor, not just the early ones.

You've done very well to do the wiring problem.   I've been there and taken many hours to completely replace the looms that are a problem.   Well-done, no small job.
